Hot oleanders in a rosy vale

Today was just one of those days.

Deer flies attacking me on my run.

A teenager, who is oh so oh so oh so being a TEENAGER.

A moldy bathroom in the throes of being scrubbed and painted. Two coats.

Not much inspiration to report. So, I offer a poem instead.

A classic, by Robert Herrick, and one of my favorites.

To all you Virgins not making much of your time.

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time

by Robert Herrick
GATHER ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old time is still a-flying :
And this same flower that smiles to-day
 To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
 The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
 And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
 When youth and blood are warmer ;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
 Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may go marry :
For having lost but once your prime
 You may for ever tarry.

(Post title comes from Edward Robert Bulwer Lytton’s poem, “A Night in Italy”.

Looking forward to some Hot Oleanders in Italy, girls)

  1. Lovely.
    Thanks.
What is the hot oleander connection?

  2. No connection to the oleander and the herrick poem. It’s just a piece of a line from another poem that I liked.

  3. Ugh. I hate deer flies.

    Love the poem.

  4. Oh, Colleen, love that Herrick poem. First heard of it when I saw Dead Poet’s Society & then had to look up the entire verse… thanks for the reminder. Just read it all again. Good one 🙂

  5. I forgot this was in Dead Poet’s Society.
Now I want to watch that movie!
